I have created 4 beds using the 'no dig' method, after visiting the local Sussex Prairie Gardens in Henfield last year.
I frame the beds with wooden frames, just to help the beds establish their shape.
I then lay down newspaper or cardboard onto the areas where I want the beds, making sure they are very wet. This, with the compost, will stop growth of whatever is underneath (in my case, grass) creating a clear fresh bed.
I then covered the areas with soil conditioner - a very good quality of compost made locally.
That's it!
  • One bed will be 'Bee bombed' with seeds to grow bee friendly flowers.
  • Another bed will be filled with lavender and complimentary herbs and plants.
  • And the other two beds will be filled with plants with a design to give colour throughout the seasons.
I will then start planting in March. They are no dig, not weeding, but I'm keen to see how they get on.
